Facts about Bulgaria

Bulgaria was founded in 691 and is one of the, if not the, oldest unified state in Europe.

Although it's a small country with an area of 110,993.6 sq km and a population of @ 8 million it has an extremely diverse landscape with large areas of mountains and a fine coastline on the Black Sea.

Bulgaria is famous for a number of things: its food and wine - the most famous Bulgarian food product probably being yogurt which which has spread all over the world; Folk music - with a Bulgarian folk song recorded on the Voyager Golden Record which was sent into outer space by NASA; Literature - with Elias Canetti as the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1981.

Bulgaria is also famous in the sporting world with Bulgarian footballers - Dimitar Berbatov and Hristo Stoichkov, Chess players - former World Champion Veselin Topalov, Track and field athletics - Stefka Kostadinova still holds the women's High Jump record, Ice Dance - Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski have won the ISU world figure skating championships, and many other artists, musicians and scientists.

Tourism in Bulgaria is one of the most important industries and about 7 million tourists visit each year.

Many people, particularly from the United Kingdom. Russia, Germany and Ireland are buying property in Bulgaria either as holiday homes or for permanent residence.

Bulgaria is now a Parliamentary Democracy, a member of the EEC and NATO and its currency, the lev, is linked to the Euro

Sofia

Sofia, with a population of over a million, is the capital and largest city in Bulgaria.

It is one of the oldest cities in Europe

Sofia's motto is "Growing without ageing".
